IF YOUR BUSINESS OR ORGANISATION PRODUCES OR HANDLES WASTE, YOU HAVE A LEGAL OBLIGATION FROM September 28th to apply….

“THE WASTE HIERARCHY” to all waste being transferred/moved from your premises.

THE WASTE HIERARCHY – DOES IT AFFECT YOU?

Applying the waste hierarchy to prevent, recycle and recover waste (Only applies to businesses in England and Wales)

Relevant to:

Any business which generates, imports, produces, carries, keeps, treats or disposes of waste; dealers or brokers who have control of waste, and anyone responsible for handling or transferring waste.

Takes effect on

28 September 2011

From 28 September 2011, as a waste producer, you must follow the waste hierarchy when choosing a waste option, and show you have done so when you transfer your waste to another business.( ie Alwin)

The waste hierarchy duty applies to both hazardous and non-hazardous waste

You should consider each of the following five steps in turn so as to choose the least environmentally damaging method of handling waste:

NO 1 Eliminate – Produce less waste in the first place by using less, keeping things longer, reusing products or machinery, or reducing hazardous contents

NO 2 Reduce - Minimise the amount of waste you produce

No 3 Reuse – check, clean, repair or refurbish whole waste products or parts to reuse in your business or in another organisation

No 4 Recycle - goods and materials that are of no further use to you may have value for others

No 5 Dispose – burying waste at landfill sites or burning it without recovering energy is the last resort

You must also declare that you have applied the hierarchy on your waste transfer note.

This is where Alwin comes in………

We want to assist customers with this new legislation, save you the worry of storing extra paperwork, reduce the amount of paper you use.

Alwin has incorporated the Waste Hierarchy declaration into its waste transfer notes. Therefore when one of our drivers, collects any waste from you, the waste transfer note will be handed over for signing. By signing this Transfer note, you not only agree to the waste being handed over to us, but you also confirm that your Company has fulfilled its duty to apply the waste hierarchy.

One more thing……….

As part of the waste Hierarchy legislation, all Companies are required to submit their Company S.I.C. Code (Standard Industry Classification code) Please ensure all employees who sign the waste transfer notes are aware of your Company code.

Find your Company SIC Codes here:

http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/toolsToHelp/WCInfo.shtml

Contact us if you require any further assistance…..Alwin is always happy to help!

N.B. If your waste management decisions do not comply with the waste hierarchy because of other factors, you must be able to justify them. It is good practice to keep a record of your decisions.
